Update on PR Sculpting Question from Google Webmaster Help Groups Call and Matt Cutts
I just got off a WebEx call with most of the Google Webmaster Spam/Tools/Group team. The call was first of its kind as it had most of the Googler’s on talking about specific websites and issues that some users posted on Google Webmaster help.
I have saved the transcripts of the chat and Q & A for you to download from WebEx. You can find both here:
Google Questions and Answers from WebEx Call
Lots of great topics were covered, but one that was of great interest to me was PR Sculpting.
At the end of the call I was able to ask the group about validity of PR Sculpting. Matt Cutt’s was kind enough an answer. I asked:
“Can you say that PR Sculpting is important for most all websites to use? With the recent firestorm of some SEOers saying sculpting does or does not work it would help to get a definitive answer from your team.”
I can’t directly quote Matt as it was answered through audio, but he was pretty clear stating that if have a clear information architecture from the beginning (hint Shari Thurow), it is wise to spend your time elsewhere for optimization of the website.
He used his analogy again to help explain it:
Nofollowing your internals can affect your ranking in Google, but it’s a 2nd order effect.
My analogy is: suppose you’ve got $100. Would you rather work on getting $300, or would you spend your time planning how to spend your $100 more wisely.
Spending the $100 more wisely is a matter of good site architecture (and nofollowing/sculpting PageRank if you want). But most people would benefit more from looking at how to get to the $300 level.
and went on to say that PR Sculpting is just another small piece that can help some websites.
Well what I take away from this is that sure PR Sculpting can work, it is not nearly worth all the hype that many of the SEOers out there are making it out to be. But of course those that read this blog already knew that right?
Over all the call was really informative and I think Barry at SE Roundtable will be posting a much better follow up to the points that were addressed.
I did get the strong feeling that if you do have problems with Google DO NOT hesitate to post the questions on Google Webmaster help Groups. They seem to be pushing that hard on the call.
One point I thought you would like to know. A poster asked all the Googler’s if you can do one thing to improve your websites positions on the SERP’s. Matt Cutt’s shouts out before anyone can answer: “Create a blog”. I guess that helps us understand the important of this type of feature on any website competing in SERPs.
