Rand Fishkin (SEOmoz.org) interviews Vanessa Fox of Google
Rand Fishkin (SEOmoz.org) stepped in for Mike McDonald (WPN) and interviewed Vanessa Fox of Google
Decent info on this video interview at WPN:
Vanessa Fox Clarifies The Role of Google Sitemaps
Here is a run down on the points of the interview:
-Duplicate Content
Duplicating own material within website is NOT an issue with Google. No penalty involved at all. Stop worrying. Filtering does take place because their is no need to show the same page over and over in the Google SERPs.
-Text to Code
Google doesn’t care about text to code ratio. Nuf said, stop worrying about this.
-Sitemaps Formats
Sure their are many formats of sitemap feeds that the search engines accept now. Google doesn’t prefer one over the other. Just pick out the one that is easiest for you to maintain. Sitemaps does NOT impact your rankings at all. Just a facilitator for crawling.
-PR Inside of Webmaster Tools
PR is more accurate/updated in Webmaster tools than it is in the toolbar. Again who cares anyways, unless it is close to realtime, lol.
-Acquiring Links
Ignore the page rank of a page when acquiring links. Acquire links for your visitors. Of course we have been saying this for a years now.
-Google Sitemaps
Helpful for new websites for just the reason of crawling ALL the links right away. This has to do with the some of those websites that are not very accessible. You should make your websites as accessible as possible and also use sitemaps to supplement that goal.
Some good info from Google. Hopefully more to come!
